Our Neurosurgery faculty members continue to be recognized for their work in the clinical, educational, and research realms. Two of our faculty members recently were bestowed with awards for their work.

Sandeep Mittal, MD, FRCSC, FACS, along with his research collaborator, Dr. Csaba Juhasz, were selected to receive the 2013 Dr. Michael J. Brennan Scientific Distinction Award. This award is is part of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute's Heroes of Breast Cancer Program. These awards, presented in October each year, are to honor organizations and individuals that have distinguished themselves and inspired others in the fight against breast cancer. Specifically, Drs. Mittal and Juhasz were recognized for their outstanding contributions to breast cancer research.

Dr. Mittal is deeply honored to receive this award, and is happy to see the important work generated by the neuro-oncology research group within the Neurosurgery Department being recognized by basic scientists and others at Karmanos. To learn more about Dr. Mittal's research, please visit here. Congratulations to Drs. Also, Nicholas Szerlip, MD was selected for the Medical Education Research Scholars Program Award. Dr. Szerlip was one of only four Wayne State University faculty members selected to participate in this scholars program, which is designed to enhance the expertise of faculty in the area of medical education research. Dr. Szerlip's research involves targeted therapeutics in glioblastomas and their micro-environment; involvement in this program will be helpful in continuing these efforts.

Dr. Szerlip is one of the newest members of our faculty, and has taken an active role in our research efforts and the education of our residents. Congratulations goes out to Nick as well.
