Two New Faculty Members Join Neurosurgery in 2016

Our department has recently had two new additions, with both Dr. Leonardo Rangel-Castilla and Dr. Sussan Salas joining our team as Assistant Professors in July 2016.

Dr. Rangel-Castilla comes to us after finishing his residency at the Methodist Neurological Institute in Houston, Texas. He has also completed fellowships in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, and in neuroendovascular surgery at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York.

Dr. Rangel-Castilla is currently the only neurosurgeon in the metro Detroit area that performs both open and endovascular cerebrovascular surgery. This skill set allows him to approach conditions affecting the blood vessels in the brain and/or the spine in the manner that is best suited for the situation, from either inside or outside the vessel. He is looking forward to being able to bring these unique treatment opportunities to patients in need in our community.

Dr. Salas specializes in the surgical management of brain and spine tumors, especially those in delicate areas of the brain such as those that control speech and motor skills. Her specialized training allows her to integrate techniques such as stereotactic navigation, radiosurgery, microsurgery, as well as awake and asleep brain mapping to maximize outcomes for her patients. She is also credentialed to perform Gamma Knife radiosurgery.

Dr. Salas completed her neurosurgical training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She also completed fellowships in neurosurgical oncology at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine in Manhasset, New York, and in neurological surgery research at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Salas looks forward to bringing her expertise in neuro-oncology as well as her interest in advancing the field of neuro-oncology research to provide the latest advances for the treatment of patients and contribute to the first-class care currently provided by the Wayne State University School of Medicine, the Detroit Medical Center, and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
