Narrative Bio

Dr. Saroj Mathupala is a biochemist and a molecular biologist by training. His research involves analysis of aberrant metabolic pathways in highly malignant brain tumors (glioblastoma multiforme; GBMs) to identify suitable metabolic targets for drug development. His laboratory has facilities for biochemical, molecular biological, and biophysical analysis of brain tumor derived cells. His research interests are in identification and analysis of regulatory pathways of metabolic genes, ion-channels and transporters (molecular gates) expressed in tumors, and development of high throughput assay systems for screening of candidate drug libraries. His research had been continuously funded for the past decade by both national (National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society) and state (LEARN Foundation, MI) agencies as well as by an endowment (Marvin E. Klein, M.D. Charitable Fund).

Dr. Mathupala received his B.Sc. (Honors) degree in Chemistry from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Michigan State University, E. Lansing, MI. He joined the Neurosurgery Department as an assistant professor after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in tumor bioenergetics and metabolism as a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Scholar (NRSA, NIH) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD.

He functions as an external reviewer for several national and international biomedical granting agencies as well as an external Ph.D. thesis reviewer. He holds membership in national organizations including those affiliated with cancer research (AACR) and biochemistry and molecular biology (ASBMB). He is the author of over 40 peer-reviewed research publications including book chapters and reviews. Over the past decade with the Neurosurgery Department, he has been the Ph.D. research mentor for three residents, and has trained over a dozen of medical students, undergraduates and high school students in biomedical research related to brain tumors.
