Biography

Dr. Sandeep Mittal joined the Department of Neurosurgery in 2006. He attended medical school at McGill University and completed his neurosurgery residency at the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University. During his neurosurgery training, he did a clinical and research fellowship in Developmental Neurobiology. He then completed a clinical fellowship in Epilepsy Surgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute and then a second subspecialty fellowship in Neuro-Oncological Surgery and Image-Guided Neurosurgery at Brigham & Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

His primary clinical and research interests are in brain tumor surgery, epilepsy surgery, image-guided neurosurgery, and Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery. He is the Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Neuro-Oncology Team and Medical Director of the Surgical In-Patient Unit at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, and Co-Director of the Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. He is the Vice-Chair of Neurosurgery at Harper University Hospital and has a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University.

Dr. Mittal also directs the Transitional Neuro-Oncology Research Laboratory at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, which focuses on two main research programs in brain tumor neurobiology and epileptogenesis. Dr. Mittal is an accomplished clinical educator and research scientist with over 55 peer-reviewed publications and 16 book chapters.

Dr. Mittal is board certified in Neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
