Detroit Receiving Hospital

All cranial and spine trauma and acute neurosurgical emergencies are admitted to this facility. Neurological critical care management is taught at Detroit Receiving Hospital by neurocritical care intensivists who have a joint appointment in neurosurgery and neurology, and by the Chief of Neurotrauma. The unit is under the direction of the attending neurosurgeon on call and the intensivist, both of whom oversee the activities of the residents. The residents manage the ventilators, fluid balance, ICP drains, pressure control, and perform all invasive procedures including ventriculostomies, central lines, CVP lines and arterial lines.

Harper University Hospital

Critical care management of major elective cranial and spine patients is under the combined responsibility of the attending neurosurgeon and the ICU intensivist. The neurosurgery residents work in the ICU under the direct supervision of the senior staff and ICU fellows and can manage ventilators, fluid balance, ICP drains and pressure control, and perform all invasive procedures including ventriculostomies, central lines, CVP lines and arterial lines.

Children's Hospital of Michigan

Pediatric patients in need of critical care management are placed in the pediatric surgical ICU. The patients are managed by the residents, supervised by the senior pediatric neurosurgery faculty and a pediatric intensivist. Neurosurgery residents perform ventriculostomies, place central lines, tap shunts, place ICP monitors and measure ICP.

Sinai Grace Hospital

Critical care management of all neurosurgery patients, including neurotrauma, major elective cranial and spine patients occurs in the Surgical and Medical ICUs.  These patients are managed under the combined responsibility of the attending neurosurgeon and the ICU intensivist.  The neurosurgery residents work in the ICU under the direct supervision of senior neurosurgery and ICU staff.  Neurosurgery residents are expected to provide significant input into ventilator management, fluid balance, ICP drains and pressure control, as it pertains to the neurosurgical patient.  He/she performs all invasive procedures including ventriculostomies, ICP monitors, central lines and arterial lines.
